Holy hangover, and I was craving me some Bloody’s and Bene’s. After a crazy night in Asheville, it was a slow start to our morning. But not to worry, because Mayfel’s serves breakfast all day.
Mayfel’s was within walking distance from our hotel – which was a bonus. Double bonus – it was a beautiful day, and we sat on the front patio. (They also have a back porch, but we didn’t make it that far.) We hardly had a wait, and we were immediately greeted by our server (who also seemed to be in the same cheerful-yet-hurting mood as we were). Delicious coffee, ice cold water and a spicy and flavorful Bloody Mary were just the trick to start our day off on the right path. (On the weekends, I believe they even have a Make-Your-Own Bloody Mary bar – yum.)
For some crazy reason, I felt we needed to have a breakfast appetizer. After all, it was almost lunch time?? So, we had a small order of the beignets. Be warned – the small order came with 4 toasty-fresh donuts heavily doused in powdered sugar. I only finished about half of one before my breakfast main-dish arrived. And then there was no sense in being distracted by a tasty dessert-like breakfast appetizer. It was time to get serious.
All of the benedict options seemed completely delicious – but I chose the one with vegetarian sausage and fried green tomatoes. I consider myself to be a bit of a benedict-connoisseur, seeing as this is probably the only meal I ever order out for breakfast (unless they don’t have that, and then they better have huevos rancheros). This eggs benedict might be at the top of the list for me. The eggs were perfectly poached, the hollandaise sauce was tart and tangy with lime (instead of lemon) juice and the veggie sausage was moist and flavorful. And come on now – fried green tomatoes? What more can I say.
What I can say is that I didn’t finish it – seriously! It was too much, and I hardly touched my potatoes in a mere attempt to not have to sacrifice a bite of the benedict. I skipped a third cup of coffee. I replenished my glass of water after the profound advice of my waiter that “Hydration is key to success”. But I failed, just short of finishing my second deliciously poached egg.
I will return, Mayfel’s – and I will conquer.
