Ok, just realized we haven’t been offering anything to drink to go with all these tasty dishes, so here’s my favorite margarita:

You will need:

  • Silver Tequila
  • Cointreau
  • Gran Marnier
  • Simple Syrup
  • Fresh Limes
  • Orange
  • Salt
  • Pint glass and metal shaker
  • Ice
  • Mariachi Band

You will need a simple syrup mixture, which is just sugar water.  It is 2 to 1, sugar to water.  I usually make enough to fill an empty liquor bottle and just keep it stashed in the liquor cabinet with the rest of the goodies.  Bring the water and sugar to a boil, and stir while boiling for a few minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Add to a pint glass full of ice:

2 oz. Don Julio Silver Tequila  (other recommended silver tequilas are Patron and Herradura)

1 oz. Cointreau

2 oz. Fresh lime juice (DO NOT use Roses Lime!)

1/2 oz. Simple Syrup (This is what to adjust depending on how sweet you want it – a traditional margarita uses no sugar, but most Gringos have gotten used to super-sweet margarita mixes, so if you can’t handle the lime like a real Caballero, add more Simple Syrup.)

Splash fresh Orange Juice.

Cover the glass with a metal shaker, and shake the Gonzales out of it.  The  colder the better.

Prepare another pint glass (or re-use the mixing glass, depending on your level of class) – rub a lime wedge around the rim and dip the the glass into a plate of salt (preferably Kosher)

Pour the contents of the shaker into the salted glass.

Slowly pour 1/2 oz of Gran Marnier on the top of the margarita.

Garnish the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and an orange wedge.

Don your sombrero and enjoy!
